UTSA is second largest school that’s never played football

Currently, the largest school that participates in the NCAA but has never hosted a football team is Utah Valley University with an enrollment of 32,670, with UTSA coming in right behind them at 30,395. However, there are plenty of schools who previously had football, but have since seen it disbanded, including New York University with an enrollment of 50,917.

Here is my full list of schools with over 15,000 undergrads who participate in the NCAA and have no football team:

East Central DT commits to UTSA as preferred walk-on

Gant KiolbassaThe Wilson County News broke the news last Tuesday that East Central DT Gant Kiolbassa (6-2, 265) had committed to the Roadrunners:

Much of the success the East Central Hornet football team experienced in 2010 was due to the tenacious play of its defense. And one of the driving forces of that defense was Gant Kiolbassa, a standout defensive end for East Central. Kiolbassa struck fear into the minds of his opponents this past season, and he hopes to do the same in the coming years as he competes as a member of the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners football team.

Kiolbassa was given a grade of 40 by ESPN and was included on many preseason players-to-watch lists.

He finished the season with 82 tackles, including 23 for loss, eight sacks, two forced fumbles, one pass break-up and nine QB pressures. He was named to the Texas Sports Writer’s Association 5A All-State Third Team and the 5A All-Area Defensive Line.

I was able to confirm that he will be joining UTSA as a preferred walk-on for the 2011 season.
