Roadrunners in the NFL – Week 10

DAVID MORGAN II

TE – Minnesota Vikings – UTSA ’11-’15

David Morgan was back on the active roster this week, but he failed to earn any snaps on offense and appeared in just 7 special teams plays (27%) during the Vikings’ 26-20 loss to the Redskins.

Minnesota has now lost four straight games after their Week 6 bye that they entered as the league’s last remaining undefeated team at 5-0.

DAVID MORGAN II

TE – Minnesota Vikings – UTSA ’11-’15

In Pat Shurmur’s first week in charge of the Vikings offense, David Morgan was named to the inactive list for the first time this season. Shurmur chose to use just two tight ends, receiver Kyle Rudolph and blocker Rhett Ellison, leaving Morgan and MyCole Pruitt on the outside looking in.

The one bright spot for Morgan fans came near the end of regulation when the Vikings ran a designed tight end handoff that saw Rhett Ellison score the first rushing touchdown of his career on his first-ever carry.

Why would this be good news for Morgan? Well, now we know Shurmur isn’t afraid to give the ball to the supposed blocking tight end, and Ellison showed that he perhaps shouldn’t be trusted with such a role when he fumbled the ball just after crossing the goal line.

If Shurmur prefers having two multi-faceted tight ends rather than the strict receiving/blocking roles that Norv Turner used then we may see Morgan start getting more of the TE2 snaps going forward.

Earlier this week, the Vikings waived MyCole Pruitt and signed him to the practice squad. Shurmur and his staff must feel confident enough in either Ellison or Morgan as a pass-catching tight end since Pruitt was largely seen as Rudolph’s backup in that role.

Roadrunners in the NFL – Week 8

DAVID MORGAN II

TE – Minnesota Vikings – UTSA ’11-’15

It was another disappointing week for fans of David Morgan, as the sixth-round draft pick only saw the field for two offensive snaps (3%) and five special teams snaps (19%) in the Vikings’ Monday night loss to the Bears.

It was a slight improvement over last week when all of the blocking tight end snaps went to incumbent Rhett Ellison, but it’s also the second straight week with less than 20% of snaps featuring two tight ends.

But the big news after the game was the resignation of offensive coordinator Norv Turner. While Turner was a big proponent of tight ends and the two-TE system, his replacement Pat Shurmur won’t be much different.

Shurmur’s familiarity with the unit may also work in Morgan’s favor, as he spent the first half of the season coaching tight ends and was likely involved in the decision to draft Morgan in April.

TEDDY WILLIAMS

CB/ST – Carolina Panthers – UTSA (Track) ’06-’10

Teddy Williams was placed on injured reserve by the Panthers last Friday with a left knee injury, effectively ending his season.

Teddy Williams placed on injured reserve

The Carolina Panthers placed cornerback Teddy Williams on injured reserve Friday morning with a left knee injury, effectively ending his season.

The former UTSA sprinter left practice on Thursday during warm-ups and was unable to return to the field.

“Teddy Williams came out to practice, we were getting warmed up and stuff like that and he kind of felt something,” said head coach Ron Rivera at the time. “And so he went in to see (the athletic trainer) and they examined him.”

This injury comes at an especially unfortunate time for Williams, as he had just worked his way into the cornerback rotation and was coming off the best game of his career two weeks ago, when he recorded six tackles and his first NFL interception.

Williams had an up-and-down season prior to his breakout in Week 6, serving as the team’s workhorse on special teams in Week 1 before missing out on the active roster for the next three weeks.

His return in Week 5 was the first time he saw the field as a cornerback all year, but his most memorable moment came when he ran into punt returner Ted Ginn Jr., causing him to muff the punt and lose the ball to Tampa Bay.

After appearing in 16 games for Carolina last year on their way to Super Bowl 50, Williams will end the 2016 campaign having played in just three games, recording a total of six tackles, two pass deflections and one interception returned for 19 yards.

DAVID MORGAN II

TE – Minnesota Vikings – UTSA ’11-’15

Coming off the Vikings’ bye week, David Morgan II returned from a knee injury in Minnesota’s 21-10 loss to Philadelphia, the team’s first loss of the year.

Unfortunately for Morgan, fellow blocking tight end Rhett Ellison also returned from injury this week and ate up all of the two-TE offensive snaps. Morgan finished the game with just five snaps, all on special teams.

The Panthers were on their bye in Week 7 and there are reports that a few cornerbacks may be returning from injury soon, including second-round draft pick James Bradberry, which could eat into Williams’ newfound playing time.
