Roadrunners in the NFL – Week 4

*crickets*

Perhaps it is fitting that UTSA’s bye week would also extend to its alumni in the NFL. Teddy Williams remained inactive for the Panthers for the third straight week, and Brian Price’s Green Bay Packers are on a bye this week.

After leaving last week’s game with a knee injury, David Morgan did not practice this week and was ruled out of the Vikings Monday night matchup against the New York Giants. A timetable for his recovery is unknown, but he has not been placed on the injured reserve so a return sometime within the next eight weeks is likely.

  • New York Giants @ Green Bay Packers (Brian Price) – 7:30pm – NBC
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Carolina Panthers (Teddy Williams) – Monday 7:30pm – ESPN

Roadrunners in the NFL – Week 3

The NFL’s third week provided us with another debut for a UTSA alum and some bad news for another, while former track star Teddy Williams remained inactive with the Panthers, depriving us of our first Roadrunner vs. Roadrunner action of the year.

Brian Price

Last Thursday, the Green Bay Packers announced that they signed UTSA alum Brian Price from the practice squad to the active roster, and he immediately received praise from an NFL personnel executive.

“I like Brian Price. He’s got a chance.”

Price saw the field on ten snaps (15%) and “didn’t look out of place,” which is high praise for a rookie making his NFL debut.

The Packers have been riddled with injuries on the defensive side of the ball, making Price one of eight rookies to get playing time for Green Bay in Week 3.

David Morgan II

On a weekend that Roadrunner fans already wanted for forget, we were hit with even more bad news as David Morgan II was injured in the Vikings 22-10 win over the Carolina Panthers. He left the game in the third quarter with an apparent knee injury.

Even before the injury, it appeared that Rhett Ellison had surpassed Morgan and regained his job as the blocking tight end for the Vikings, as Morgan only saw action on 3 offensive snaps (6%) and 4 special teams snaps (15%), far fewer than Ellison’s 21 and 16.

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer remained vague on the subject of Morgan’s injury and wouldn’t give a timetable on his return, but did say that he wouldn’t be put on injured reserve.

Roadrunners in the NFL – Week 2

Week 2 was pretty uneventful for UTSA alumni, as Teddy Williams was inactive for the Panthers in their game against the San Francisco 49ers, leaving David Morgan as the Roadrunners’ sole representative.

David Morgan was once again the #12 most-used offensive player for the Vikings in their 17-14 win over Green Bay in their home opener.

Following up on his first ever NFL game, Morgan saw nearly as much action in his second game, appearing on 17 offensive snaps (29%) and 3 special teams snaps (12%). He still appears to be the top-choice blocking TE in Minnesota and should continue to get solid playing time.

Roadrunners in the NFL – Week 1

Heading into the opening week of the NFL’s regular season we had two UTSA alumni on active rosters. Here’s how they did in their season openers:

David Morgan II

TE – Minnesota Vikings – UTSA ’11-’15

David Morgan II
David Morgan II

After becoming UTSA’s first All-American and first draft pick, David Morgan II became the first UTSA football player to appear in a regular season NFL game in the Minnesota Vikings’ 25-16 win on the road over the Tennessee Titans.

Although he didn’t make an appearance on the stat sheet, Morgan did see the field on 20 offensive snaps (32%) and 4 special teams snaps (14%). This made him the 12th-most-used offensive player and the top-choice blocking tight end as incumbent Rhett Ellison is eased into the lineup after returning from a torn patellar tendon he suffered in January.

Despite the somewhat limited snaps, Morgan made his presence known and earned a 66.3 grade from Pro Football Focus, who had previously named him the #1 run-blocking tight end in the 2016 NFL draft, and that grade was good enough to make him the 5th-most effective offensive player for Minnesota.

Teddy Williams

The other UTSA alum in action during opening week was former track star Teddy Williams in Carolina’s 21-20 loss to the Denver Broncos in the Thursday night NFL opening game.

Williams did not make any appearances at cornerback, but appeared in a team-high 19 special teams snaps (79%).
