Week in Review – 3/19/12

Football

Early last week the RowdyReport.com 2013 UTSA Football Recruiting Board was released, featuring 55 prospects who are on the UTSA radar.

Spring practice starts tomorrow for the Roadrunners and will continue in the weeks leading up to the April 15 Spring Game. One player who we won’t be seeing at the Spring Game is running back Chris Johnson, who has reportedly left the team, joining WR Jake Wanamaker, RB Tevin Williams, DE Kristian Bryant and OL Brady Brown as scholarship players from 2011 who won’t be returning this season.

In last week’s Week in Review we mentioned that Charlie Reeve had been offered the position of tight ends coach, which was vacated by now-offensive coordinator Kevin Brown, and it has recently been reported that he has accepted the position, with an official announcement coming shortly.

The Roadrunners will have two fewer days to prepare for their first ever FBS season, as the season opening game at South Alabama has been moved to Thursday, August 30. ESPN has not announced their opening week broadcast schedule yet, but a Thursday night matchup of recent startups might just catch their eye.

Game 8 Preview – UTSA vs. Georgia State

This week, the UTSA Roadrunners will be looking to put an end to their three game losing streak by winning their first game in over a month, after coming off of their first bye week of the season. They will be facing the Georgia State Panthers, who started their football program just a year before UTSA and are coming off a double-overtime victory over South Alabama. That’s the same South Alabama team that UTSA took into two overtimes earlier in the year, so this is sure to be an exciting matchup.

Game 2 Preview – UTSA vs. McMurry

The UTSA Roadrunners opened their inaugural season in front of 56,743 fans last week with a convincing 31-3 victory over the Northeastern State RiverHawks. The star of the show was undoubtedly sophomore quarterback Eric Soza, who led the Roadrunners to three touchdowns on each of their first three drives, rushing for the first and passing to Jake Wanamaker and Kam Jones for the next two.

We could see more of the same from Soza this week as UTSA’s next opponent, the McMurry War Hawks, are coming into San Antonio hoping to bounce back from the 82-6 thrashing given to them by Stephen F. Austin.

McMurry is a private university located in Abilene, Texas with an enrollment of just under 1,500 students, less than 5% of the student body at UTSA. The War Hawks currently compete at the Division III level as a member of the American Southwest Conference, but will move up to D-II in 2012-13 and compete as an independent in football, while other sports join the Heartland Conference.

The War Hawks are a team that is built around their passing game, led by quarterback Jake Mullin, who was named a first-team Preseason All-American by Consensus Draft Services. He threw for 2,859 yards and completed 61% of his passes last season, while throwing for 35 touchdowns and only two interceptions.

Preseason injury report – 10 days to kickoff

LB Drew Douglas (Fr-HS)
Douglas is out for the season with a shoulder injury and will be using his redshirt year to recover. With only two linebackers needed for the 4-2-5 and a decent amount of depth at the position, it’s not a huge loss for UTSA, and he likely would have been redshirted regardless.

RB Sean Atkins (Jr-TR)
Transfer running back Sean Atkins will also miss the Roadrunners’ inaugural season with a shoulder injury, with an expected return of February/March 2012. He wasn’t expected to be much of a factor in a backfield that has five scholarship players and a couple notable walk-ons, but he’s worth mentioning as he’s had one of the more interesting playing careers of anyone on the team. For the past two seasons he played collegiate football in Canada as a member of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men football team. He lead the X-Men in rushing last season with 289 yards on 77 carries, while playing in all eight of the team’s games.
