UTSA players reported to camp today and the official camp roster was posted, as well as a video with interviews from Coker, Soza and Jason Neill.
At first glance, the only surprise is the omission of DE Caleb Hundley from the official roster.
Here’s the official release from goUTSA.com, including the acknowledgement of OSU transfer Ashaad Mabry.
Head coach Larry Coker announced Friday that 94 players reported to campus in preparation of his program’s first official fall camp, which is scheduled to begin on Sunday.
“This is an exciting day, not only for the players and coaching staff, but for UTSA and the city of San Antonio,” Coker said. “We’ve been waiting for more than two years for this day to arrive and the guys seemed to have a little more hop in their step because they can sense the beginning is near. We’ve had a great summer from a strength and conditioning standpoint and I’m looking forward to getting everyone on the practice field on Sunday in preparation for our inaugural game against Northeastern State.”
Fifty-seven scholarship players and 38 walk-ons comprise the 94-man roster that will practice 24 times before classes begin on Wednesday, Aug. 24.
One of the scholarship athletes that reported on Friday was defensive tackle Ashaad Mabry (San Antonio, Texas/MacArthur HS). Mabry, who originally signed a National Letter of Intent with Oklahoma State in February, was a 2010 second-team all-area pick by the San Antonio Express News following a senior season that saw him help lead the Brahmas to a 12-2 record and a spot in the Class 5A Division II State Quarterfinals. The 6-foot-3, 290-pounder finished the campaign with 75 tackles and three sacks. That came on the heels of a junior year that saw him record 54 stops. The son of Corchelle and Inard Mabry, he was born on Nov. 4, 1992.
The Roadrunners will enter camp with 49 players on offense (17 WR/13 OL/9 RB/5 QB/5 TE), 41 on defense (14 DL/14 S/7 CB/6 LB) and four on special teams (3 K/1 DS).
UTSA’s inaugural game is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 3, against Northeastern State. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at the Alamodome.
