Week in Review – 3/19/12

Football

Early last week the RowdyReport.com 2013 UTSA Football Recruiting Board was released, featuring 55 prospects who are on the UTSA radar.

Spring practice starts tomorrow for the Roadrunners and will continue in the weeks leading up to the April 15 Spring Game. One player who we won’t be seeing at the Spring Game is running back Chris Johnson, who has reportedly left the team, joining WR Jake Wanamaker, RB Tevin Williams, DE Kristian Bryant and OL Brady Brown as scholarship players from 2011 who won’t be returning this season.

In last week’s Week in Review we mentioned that Charlie Reeve had been offered the position of tight ends coach, which was vacated by now-offensive coordinator Kevin Brown, and it has recently been reported that he has accepted the position, with an official announcement coming shortly.

The Roadrunners will have two fewer days to prepare for their first ever FBS season, as the season opening game at South Alabama has been moved to Thursday, August 30. ESPN has not announced their opening week broadcast schedule yet, but a Thursday night matchup of recent startups might just catch their eye.

Conference Realignment

With Karl Benson taking over the Sun Belt and making his intentions known of expanding the conference, specifically into Texas, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that UTSA is apparently on the Sun Belt shortlist and that the conference might have already extended unofficial invitations to UTSA and Charlotte (a 2013 startup).

Another interesting scenario would be for UTSA to join the Alliance (C-USA/MWC merger) as a football-only member as an eastern school to balance out Hawaii, who will become football-only members of the MWC in 2012.

Women’s Golf

Just two-thirds of the way through their season, the women’s golf team has already set a program record with their third tournament win this season, along with their first ever back-to-back wins in program history as they claimed the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate crown on Sunday.

Baseball

The baseball team started off the week at home with a contest against #29 TCU as the Roadrunners battled to 12 innings before falling by a final score of 7-3. The extra innings seemed to take their toll on the team, who were shut out by Notre Dame the following night, 12-0.

After losing their first two games of the weekend to Northwestern State, UTSA finally bounced back with a 13-3 run-rule victory over the Demons on Sunday to close out the week.

Softball

The UTSA softball team traveled up I-35 to Waco last week for the Baylor Spring Break Round Robin, where they would split their two games, defeating North Dakota State 6-5 before being shut out by #15 Baylor 5-0. The team then fell to 1-3 in conference by losing both weekend games to McNeese.

Tennis

The UTSA men’s tennis team started this week unranked for the first time in nearly a month and split their two games of the week, earning a 5-2 victory over Elon and falling to #33 UNC Wilmington 5-2.
