Week in Review – 5/8/12

Conference Realignment

Last Friday marked the official announcement of Conference USA’s five latest additions: UTSA, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, FIU and Charlotte. Each program will join in all sports in 2013, with the exception of Charlotte who will be waiting until 2015 to move their football program.

The Mountain West also announced their additions of Utah State and San Jose State, which leaves the WAC with just two football-playing members, New Mexico State and Idaho.

Baseball

The Roadrunner baseball team looked like they might be back on track on Friday, run-ruling Nicholls 14-1, but reclaimed the bottom seed in the conference by dropping their matchup on Saturday 10-2. Sunday’s game was cancelled due to inclement weather. Since UTSA and Nicholls are all but eliminate from tournament contention, no make-up date was announced as the game likely won’t be necessary.

The team will renew the I-35 rivalry over the weekend, playing two games in San Marcos on Friday and Sunday, with the Saturday game played in San Antonio. Texas State comes into the weekend in 4th place with a 15-12 record, while UTSA is in last at 9-17.

Softball

The softball team closed out the regular season this past weekend by sweeping Stephen F. Austin, 1-0 on Friday and 2-1 on Saturday.

The Roadrunners enter this weekend’s Southland Conference Tournament as the 4th seed and will face #5 Central Arkansas at 11am on Thursday in San Antonio. The winner of the first round matchup will take on top-seed Texas State at 4pm on the same day in the second round of the double elimination tournament.

Tennis

The men’s tennis team will travel to Berkeley to face #14 California in their first-round matchup of the NCAA Tournament this Saturday.

Golf

The UTSA women’s golf team is headed to Columbus, Ohio for the NCAA Central Regional, which will take place from Thursday to Saturday of this week. The top eight schools out of 24 will advance to the NCAA Championship.

The men’s golf team inked Garrison Lackey (Texarkana College) to an LOI this week, joining two fall signees Brett Hogan (Bishop O’Byrne HS – Calgary, Alberta) and J.J. Lindsey (Adkins, TX – home schooled). All members of the 2012 team will return as well.

Volleyball

The Roadrunner volleyball program added North Shore HS middle hitter Kristin Booker this week, joining fall signees Jordan Katara (Poth HS – Poth, TX), Annie Kunes (Big Foot HS – Fontana, WI) and Kyle Schott (Cy-Fair HS – Cypress, TX).
