DAVID MORGAN II
TE – Minnesota Vikings – UTSA ’11-’15
In Pat Shurmur’s first week in charge of the Vikings offense, David Morgan was named to the inactive list for the first time this season. Shurmur chose to use just two tight ends, receiver Kyle Rudolph and blocker Rhett Ellison, leaving Morgan and MyCole Pruitt on the outside looking in.
The one bright spot for Morgan fans came near the end of regulation when the Vikings ran a designed tight end handoff that saw Rhett Ellison score the first rushing touchdown of his career on his first-ever carry.
Why would this be good news for Morgan? Well, now we know Shurmur isn’t afraid to give the ball to the supposed blocking tight end, and Ellison showed that he perhaps shouldn’t be trusted with such a role when he fumbled the ball just after crossing the goal line.
If Shurmur prefers having two multi-faceted tight ends rather than the strict receiving/blocking roles that Norv Turner used then we may see Morgan start getting more of the TE2 snaps going forward.
Earlier this week, the Vikings waived MyCole Pruitt and signed him to the practice squad. Shurmur and his staff must feel confident enough in either Ellison or Morgan as a pass-catching tight end since Pruitt was largely seen as Rudolph’s backup in that role.
