Track & Field

UTSA track & field coach Aaron Fox was named the Southland Conference Outdoor Coach of the Year late last week. Fox helped coach the men’s team to their fourth conference title in school history, earning them a trip to Austin this weekend for the NCAA Championships Preliminary Rounds.

Baseball

The Roadrunner baseball team only earned one victory in the three-game series over the weekend against Lamar, putting an end to their rather disappointing season. The team finishes with a 22-32 overall record and 11-21 in conference, giving them the worst record in the league.

Commissioner’s Cup

Now that the baseball season has come to a close, the Southland Conference has announced the final standings for the Commissioner’s Cup, which is given to the school with the best all-around performance in all sports sponsored by the conference. Stephen F. Austin took home the Cup for the second time in school history, while Lamar took the Men’s title and Texas State took the Women’s title. UTSA finished third in both the overall standings and women’s standings, and fourth in men’s.

Track & Field

The UTSA men’s track and field team won the Southland Conference Outdoor Championship over the weekend, running the table in Southland competition after winning the Indoor Championship in February. The team heads to Austin on May 24 for the NCAA Championships Preliminary Rounds.

The women’s track and field team also impressed over the weekend, finishing in second place to Stephen F. Austin by a mere 2.5 points, which was the program’s best result in 15 years.

Baseball

The Roadrunner baseball team dropped two of three games this weekend to the rival Texas State Bobcats, eliminating UTSA from postseason contention after falling to 10-19 in conference. UTSA also failed to complete the season-sweep of Baylor, falling to the Bears 14-3 in Waco on Tuesday night.

The team closes out the season at home this weekend, hosting Lamar for games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Conference Realignment

Last Friday marked the official announcement of Conference USA’s five latest additions: UTSA, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, FIU and Charlotte. Each program will join in all sports in 2013, with the exception of Charlotte who will be waiting until 2015 to move their football program.

The Mountain West also announced their additions of Utah State and San Jose State, which leaves the WAC with just two football-playing members, New Mexico State and Idaho.

Baseball

The Roadrunner baseball team looked like they might be back on track on Friday, run-ruling Nicholls 14-1, but reclaimed the bottom seed in the conference by dropping their matchup on Saturday 10-2. Sunday’s game was cancelled due to inclement weather. Since UTSA and Nicholls are all but eliminate from tournament contention, no make-up date was announced as the game likely won’t be necessary.

The team will renew the I-35 rivalry over the weekend, playing two games in San Marcos on Friday and Sunday, with the Saturday game played in San Antonio. Texas State comes into the weekend in 4th place with a 15-12 record, while UTSA is in last at 9-17.
