Week in Review – 11/4/16

FOOTBALL

In the annual is-it-or-isn’t-it-a-rivalry game against North Texas, the Roadrunners took care of business and extended their series lead to 3-1 with a 31-17 victory on Saturday at the Alamodome.

Jarveon Williams ran for 74 yards against the Mean Green and is now just 36 yards shy of becoming the program’s first 2,000-yard career rusher.

The other half of UTSA’s running back duo, Jalen Rhodes, notched his 6th and 7th rushing touchdowns this season, putting him just one score away from tying the season-high 8 rushing TDs set by Evans Okotcha in 2012 and matched by Williams in 2015.

UTSA (4-4, 3-2 C-USA) heads to Murfreesboro to face Middle Tennessee (6-2, 3-1 C-USA) this Saturday as 19-point underdogs.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

UTSA’s best season since 2011 came to an end on Friday, as the Roadrunners fell to Louisiana Tech 3-0 on Senior Night at Park West.

Needing a win and some help to qualify for the conference tournament, the Roadrunners’ postseason drought was extended to five seasons after the loss, but the future looks bright for the program that featured a very underclassmen-heavy roster under third-year head coach Greg Sheen.

UTSA forward Jordyn Lacy was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team, becoming the first field player to receive the honor in program history. Lacy started every match this season and finished with five goals and five assists.

VOLLEYBALL

UTSA volleyball split their two matches over the weekend, defeating UAB in four sets on Friday before getting swept by Louisiana Tech on Sunday. It was the first sweep that the Roadrunners have suffered in conference play this year.

Despite the loss, UTSA remains second-best in the conference in terms of RPI (64) and have already clinched a C-USA tournament berth.


The Roadrunners (7-3 C-USA) return home to take on FAU (8-2) on Friday and FIU (2-8) on Sunday in their final two home games of the season.

MEN’S GOLF

The UTSA golf team finished in second place at the Price’s “Give ‘Em Five” Invitational on the back of Zander Lozano’s individual title. Lozano was named C-USA Player of the Week for his performance.

The team is in Hawaii this weekend to close out the fall season at the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic.

CROSS COUNTRY

The men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the Conference USA Championships last weekend and finished in 8th and 9th place, respectively.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Roadrunners opened up the season last Friday with a 75-34 exhibition win over Texas A&M International. They will play one more exhibition game, at home against Trinity on Saturday, before kicking off the regular season on November 11.

ROADRUNNERS IN THE PROS

Teddy Williams was placed on injured reserve last week, while David Morgan II continued to struggle to get playing time in Norv Turner’s offense, but will now aim for a larger role under interim offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur.

UTSA basketball alum Ryan Bowie was selected in the NBA’s D-League Draft, with pick 17 of the fourth round (82nd overall) by the Sioux Falls Skyforce. The Skyforce will travel to Texas for six games this season (two each in Frisco, Cedar Park, and Hidalgo).

 

Week in Review – 10/14/16

Football

It was a historic weekend for UTSA as they routed division-favorites Southern Miss, 55-32, breaking numerous school records in the process.

Led by running back duo Jalen Rhodes and Jarveon Williams, the Roadrunners averaged 11.3 yards per play in the contest – a number that hasn’t been hit in FBS play since 2013 when Florida State averaged 11.6 against Syracuse on the way to a National Championship.

Redshirt freshman Josiah Tauaefa was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week after recording 12 tackles and the first interception of his career. Tauaefa is tied for the third-most tackles per game in the FBS, and is on pace to be a shoo-in Freshman All-American.

UTSA (2-3, 1-1 C-USA) will look to carry that momentum into this weekend’s game at Rice (0-5, 0-3 C-USA), the last remaining winless team in the league, as the Roadrunner faithful make their biennial pilgrimage down I-10 to paint Rice Stadium orange.

Volleyball

The UTSA volleyball team’s nine-game winning streak finally came to an end this weekend as they lost their lone match of the week at Marshall, three sets to two.

The Roadrunners (3-1 C-USA) will look to get back on track this weekend as they travel to Murfreesboro on Friday to face Middle Tennessee (1-5) before a quick turnaround for a home game on Sunday against UTEP (2-3).

Women’s Soccer

In their first game of the weekend, the Roadrunners fell to Rice 3-2, squandering a 1-0 lead at halftime. Both goals were scored by defender/forward Alexis Alaniz, helping her to become the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week.

After giving up 2+ goals in seven straight matches, UTSA’s defense hit their stride at just the right time in the second match of the weekend, recording their first shutout of the season in their 3-0 victory over defending conference champions North Texas, handing the Mean Green their first loss in conference play this year.

UTSA’s first goal was scored by senior Brianna Livecchi from 25 yards out, officially assisted by goalkeeper Hannah Weisse, who booted the ball downfield before being mis-hit by a North Texas defender and blasted past the goalkeeper by Livecchi. Norwegian forward Kaja Skare put the final nail in the coffin, burying a penalty in the 82nd minute following a handball in the box. It was her 7th goal of the season, just three goals shy of the UTSA record set by Allison Dillon in 2007.

The Roadrunners (6 pts) will kick off a three-game road stretch this weekend with games at UTEP (6) on Friday and bottom-of-table UAB (4) on Sunday.

Roadrunners in the Pros

Brian Price was inactive for the Packers last weekend, and David Morgan II remained sidelined with an injury, leaving Teddy Williams as the lone UTSA representative in NFL action last weekend. Williams’ Panthers fell to Tampa Bay, 17-14, with the former track star appearing on a season-high 32 snaps.

Former UTSA golfer Johan Edfors won the Terre dei Consoli Open on Sunday, finishing 13 under par. It was the fourth Challenge Tour win of his career, and puts him 33rd in the Road to Oman rankings.
