Preseason injury report – 10 days to kickoff

LB Drew Douglas (Fr-HS)
Douglas is out for the season with a shoulder injury and will be using his redshirt year to recover. With only two linebackers needed for the 4-2-5 and a decent amount of depth at the position, it’s not a huge loss for UTSA, and he likely would have been redshirted regardless.

RB Sean Atkins (Jr-TR)
Transfer running back Sean Atkins will also miss the Roadrunners’ inaugural season with a shoulder injury, with an expected return of February/March 2012. He wasn’t expected to be much of a factor in a backfield that has five scholarship players and a couple notable walk-ons, but he’s worth mentioning as he’s had one of the more interesting playing careers of anyone on the team. For the past two seasons he played collegiate football in Canada as a member of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men football team. He lead the X-Men in rushing last season with 289 yards on 77 carries, while playing in all eight of the team’s games.

TE Cole Hubble (Fr-RS)
Hubble has been sidelined with a shoulder injury for a while now, and is expected to make his return in UTSA’s October 8 home game against the South Alabama Jaguars. We still haven’t really had a chance to see Hubble play very much at the tight end position, so it will be interesting to see how he fits into the rotation when he returns.

WR Earon Holmes (Fr-RS)
Holmes reportedly has the same injury as Hubble with the same expected return date. He was a standout last fall, but has struggled with the shoulder injury ever since then, and has some injury history dating back to his high school career, so he’ll be someone to watch for the next four years if he can get healthy and stay healthy.

SS Lekenwic Haynes (Jr-TR)
Haynes was our projected starter at the Dog position, and his foot injury has caused the coaching staff to shuffle some of the players around in order to replace him. There are reports that Nic Johnston has been moved from Rover to Dog, and Cody Rogers has been moved from Linebacker to Dog, with Mauricio Sanchez and Adefemi Adekeye competing for the Rover position. He is expected to be out for about a month, and if I had to guess I’d put his return date at October 8 as well.

DE William Ritter (So-RS)
The transfer from Western Illinois reportedly has an ankle injury, but he was still up and walking around at practice, so I’d expect him to return sometime before the end of September.

OL Patrick Hoog (Jr-TR)
Hoog started off preseason camp by placing at the top of the team’s strength competition and was expected to be a major contributor with his Big XII experience, but was sidelined this Saturday with an ankle injury. No details have been released regarding the severity of the injury, but it would be a huge blow to an already thin group of offensive lineman that will likely see one player suffering through a torn labrum all season (see below).

OL Cody Harris (Fr-RS)
Even though Harris is suffering through a torn labrum, he will attempt to play through it and contribute on the offensive line where he’s desperately needed. If he has to miss any time we could expect walk-on James Bakke to get some looks, or possibly even true freshman Payton Rion. If Hoog is healthy, he could move over to the tackle spot to give Harris some rest and transfers Brady Brown or Mike Sanchez could fill in at guard.

CB Jeremy Hall (Fr-RS)
Hall was listed as day-to-day earlier in camp with a groin injury, but looks to be ready to go now. He’s expected to play an integral role in the cornerback rotation, along with Darrien Starling and Crosby Adams. If he has to miss any time, then true freshmen Malcom Scott and Alondre Thorn will look to replace him on the depth chart.

RB David Glasco II, Chris Johnson, Tevin Williams
All three of these running backs were reportedly dealing with nagging injuries throughout training camp, but look good to go for the start of the season. With Johnson, Glasco and Simpson expected to fill out the RB rotation, we’re expecting Williams to use his redshirt this year unless injuries take out one of the top three guys.
